IPA guide

Other forms: assembly lines

In a factory, an assembly line is series of machines and workers that build a product step-by-step, often as it moves along a conveyor belt.

In a toy factory, you might see doll bodies moving along an assembly line, their arms, legs, and heads quickly being attached by workers at each station. This fast-paced process makes it possible to produce large quantities of goods more efficiently. Working on an assembly line involves repeating the same motions: attaching the wheels on a toy car or dipping a candy bar in chocolate. Assembly, "putting together parts or objects," has a Latin root that means "gather."
